Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: collect, record and respond to visual information using a range of techniques
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the visual‑information cycle (collect, record, respond) and its purpose.
  • Apply observation and recording techniques to produce clear visual notes.
  • Experiment with at least two media (e.g., freehand sketching, collage, digital photography) to develop ideas.
  • Evaluate a finished artwork against criteria of collection, recording and response.
  • Reflect on the process and plan improvements for future projects.
Materials Needed:
  • Sketchbook and drawing pencils
  • Coloured pencils / markers
  • Scissors and glue stick
  • Printed photographs or digital camera/smartphone
  • Laptop with illustration software (e.g., Photoshop, Illustrator)
  • Printer for image copies
  • Reflective journal or worksheet
Introduction:

Begin with a quick “What do you see around you right now?” hook, linking everyday visual information to art practice. Ask students to recall previous sketchbook work where they captured observations. Explain that today they will master the collect‑record‑respond cycle and will be assessed on clear documentation, experimentation and reflection.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list three sources of visual information they encountered this morning and share one.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Explain the visual information cycle and core skills using a slide diagram.
  3. Skill stations (20'): Rotate through three stations – freehand sketching, digital photography, and collage creation – to collect and record material.
  4. Concept development (10'): Back in the sketchbook, produce thumbnail ideas that respond to the collected images.
  5. Technique experiment (15'): Choose one technique to create a small study; teacher provides formative feedback.
  6. Reflection & evaluation (5'): Write a brief evaluation linking the study to the objectives.
  7. Plenary (5'): Recap key points, share one insight, and outline the exit ticket.
Conclusion:

Summarise how the cycle helped shape their ideas and highlight successful techniques observed. Students complete an exit ticket stating one new skill they will practice at home. Homework: photograph three textures in their environment and add brief notes for the next lesson.
