Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: apply a range of skills to produce art and design work
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and apply key technical skills (drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, digital media, 3‑D) in creating artwork.
  • Analyse visual language, composition and colour theory to develop coherent design concepts.
  • Plan, execute and evaluate a portfolio piece using the design process and appropriate material choices.
  • Reflect on ethical and sustainability considerations in material selection.
Materials Needed:
  • Sketchbooks and drawing pencils
  • Water‑based paints (acrylic, gouache, watercolor) and brushes
  • Collage supplies (paper, fabric, adhesives)
  • Printmaking tools (linoleum block, carving tools, ink)
  • Computers with Photoshop/Illustrator installed
  • Cardboard, foam board and basic model‑making tools
  • Projector and visual analysis worksheets
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual poll: display three contrasting artworks and ask students which element catches their eye. Recall previous lessons on line and colour, linking them to today’s focus on integrating multiple media. Explain that by the end of the session they will produce a small mixed‑media piece that demonstrates the design process and meets the IGCSE success criteria.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5’) – Students sketch a quick observational drawing of a simple object, focusing on line quality and value.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Review key technical skills and visual language, using the projector to show examples.
  3. Demonstration (10’) – Teacher shows how to combine collage and digital editing: create a texture, scan, and enhance in Photoshop.
  4. Studio Work (20’) – Students choose two media (e.g., painting and collage) to develop thumbnail studies and begin a mixed‑media composition.
  5. Peer Review (10’) – Pairs use a checklist based on assessment criteria to give constructive feedback.
  6. Reflection & Clean‑up (5’) – Students write a brief reflection on material choices and next steps.
Conclusion:
Gather as a group to recap the techniques explored and how they support the design brief. Students complete an exit ticket describing one skill they will apply in their portfolio piece. Assign homework to research a historical art movement and bring a visual inspiration for the next class.
