Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: develop knowledge and skills in media, processes and techniques for textiles or fashion outcomes
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and describe the properties of natural, synthetic and blended fibres.
  • Select appropriate media, processes and techniques for a given textile/fashion brief.
  • Apply construction, finishing and embellishment methods to create a prototype garment.
  • Evaluate the finished work against IGCSE assessment criteria and propose improvements.
Materials Needed:
  • Samples of natural, synthetic and blended fibres
  • Sketchbooks and drawing pencils
  • Fabric swatches, dyes, printing inks
  • Sewing machines, hand needles, thread
  • Cutting mats and fabric scissors
  • Protective gloves, aprons, eye protection
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard for demonstrations
Introduction:

Begin with a quick visual showcase of striking textile pieces to spark curiosity. Ask students what they already know about fibre types and how they influence garment performance. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to choose suitable materials, apply key techniques, and assess their work against the IGCSE criteria.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Starter – Fibre identification lab (10'): students test fibre samples (burn, feel, solubility) and record observations.
  2. Mini‑lecture & demo of the design development process (15'): flowchart walkthrough and discussion of the brief.
  3. Design research & mood‑board creation (15'): pupils gather visual inspiration and complete a concise design brief.
  4. Technique workshop – screen printing on cotton (20'): teacher demonstrates stencil making and printing; students produce a printed swatch.
  5. Construction practice – basic seam and edge finish (15'): guided sewing activity using hand and machine stitches.
  6. Prototype development (20'): students begin constructing a garment element, applying chosen techniques while teacher circulates.
  7. Peer critique using IGCSE criteria (10'): small groups give focused feedback and note areas for refinement.
  8. Plenary – recap & exit ticket (5'): each student writes one technique they will use in their next project and any lingering question.
Conclusion:

Summarise how fibre knowledge, media selection and construction techniques interrelate to produce effective fashion outcomes. Collect the exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a brief homework: create a digital mood board and sketch a garment that incorporates at least two new techniques explored today.
