Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Kiswahili
Lesson Topic: show a sense of audience
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify audience characteristics (age, education level, context) in speaking tasks.
  • Adapt language, tone, and pace to suit the identified audience.
  • Organise a short spoken presentation with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Demonstrate effective non‑verbal cues and responsive interaction with the audience.
  • Evaluate peer presentations using the rubric criteria for audience awareness.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for video clip
  • Printed handouts (rubric, sample dialogue, script template)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Audio recorder or smartphone for playback
  • Sticky notes for peer feedback
  • Worksheet for script writing
Introduction:
Begin with a short video of a speaker adjusting language for different audiences. Ask students what cues they noticed. Explain that today they will learn to recognise and respond to audience needs, and success will be shown by producing a short dialogue that matches a given audience.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Think‑pair‑share three ways a speaker can change language for younger listeners.
  2. Video analysis (10'): Watch a 2‑minute clip; discuss audience cues and adjustments.
  3. Mini‑lecture (8'): Present the six strategies for audience awareness with examples.
  4. Group script writing (15'): In pairs, choose an audience (teacher or younger class) and draft a 1‑minute dialogue using the introduction‑body‑conclusion structure.
  5. Role‑play & feedback (12'): Groups perform; peers use the rubric to give feedback on audience adaptation.
  6. Whole‑class reflection (5'): Teacher summarises key points and clarifies common errors.
Conclusion:
Recap the six strategies and ask each student to write one sentence describing how they would modify their tone for a formal audience as an exit ticket. For homework, students record a 30‑second speech for a chosen audience and bring the audio to the next lesson.
