Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Drama
Lesson Topic: Ancillary services: currency exchange, insurance, car hire
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose and key features of currency exchange, travel insurance, and car hire.
  • Analyse how ancillary services can create conflict or motivation in a drama scene.
  • Apply role‑play techniques to portray realistic interactions involving these services.
  • Evaluate the impact of service choices on character decisions and plot development.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts with service comparison table
  • Props: foreign banknotes, mock insurance policy, car‑key replica
  • Worksheet for storyboard planning
  • Speakers for audio clips (optional)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual of a bustling airport exchange desk to capture interest. Ask students what extra services travellers use beyond transport and accommodation, linking to prior knowledge of setting realism. Explain that today they will explore three ancillary services and identify how these can enrich their characters and scenes.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list any travel‑related services they have used.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of currency exchange, insurance, and car hire with key features (slides).
  3. Role‑play stations (15'): Small groups rotate through three stations, each performing a scripted interaction (exchange counter, insurance debate, car hire desk). Teacher circulates for feedback.
  4. Group discussion (5'): Identify dramatic tension points emerging from each role‑play.
  5. Storyboard activity (15'): Teams create a short storyboard that weaves all three services into a coherent travel narrative.
  6. Plenary (5'): Share one storyboard idea, discuss how ancillary services added authenticity, and note homework.
Conclusion:
Summarise how ancillary services can provide plot hooks and realistic detail in drama. Have each pupil write an exit ticket stating one way they will use a service in their next performance. Assign homework to draft a short scene incorporating at least two of the services discussed.
