Introduction:
Begin with a quick “What would you write?” hook, showing a brief news article excerpt. Review how purpose, audience and format shape language choices. Explain that today’s success criteria are to use varied vocabulary and at least three different sentence structures correctly.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students read a short prompt and list purpose, audience, and format.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Teacher models task analysis and introduces vocabulary registers using the handout.
  3. Planning activity (10'): Learners brainstorm ideas and complete a paragraph outline on the worksheet.
  4. Sentence‑structure workshop (10'): Review simple, compound, complex, and compound‑complex sentences; students rewrite sample sentences.
  5. Writing task (15'): Write a 180‑word article on “The Benefits of Volunteering”, aiming for required sentence types and vocabulary.
  6. Peer checklist review (10'): Pairs exchange drafts and use the checklist to give feedback.
  7. Whole‑class feedback & revision (10'): Teacher highlights common errors; students revise their work.
Conclusion:
Recap the key strategies for choosing vocabulary and varying sentence structures. Students complete an exit ticket stating one new word and one new sentence type they will use in future writing. For homework, they rewrite a paragraph from today’s article, incorporating two additional linking expressions and checking punctuation.
