Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: English Language
Lesson Topic: Demonstrate understanding of implicit meanings and attitudes in texts.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify implicit meanings and the writer’s attitudes in a passage using appropriate terminology.
  • Analyse how language features such as connotation, tone, and rhetorical devices create implicit meaning.
  • Support interpretations with accurate textual quotations and clear explanations.
  • Evaluate the impact of identified attitudes on overall meaning and audience response.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed copies of the sample passage
  • Worksheet with analysis prompts
  • Highlighters (different colours)
  • Teacher’s slide deck on language features
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:
Begin with a quick image of a gloomy cityscape to spark curiosity about hidden meanings. Review the difference between literal and implied meaning, recalling previous work on tone and connotation. Explain that today students will uncover the writer’s attitude and justify it with evidence, which will be the success criteria.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write one sentence describing what “implicit meaning” might look like in everyday language.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Review key language features (loaded adjectives, irony, metaphor, repetition, rhetorical questions) and their effects on attitude.
  3. Guided analysis (15’) – Whole‑class close reading of the sample passage; teacher models noting words, identifying attitude, and linking to textual evidence.
  4. Pair work (12’) – Students complete the worksheet, selecting quotations, explaining connotation and implicit meaning, and noting the writer’s stance.
  5. Whole‑class share (8’) – Pairs present findings; teacher highlights strong explanations and corrects misconceptions.
  6. Exam practice (10’) – Students answer one of the provided exam questions individually, applying the analytical steps.
  7. Check for understanding (5’) – Quick quiz via Kahoot/hand‑raise on key terminology.
Conclusion:
Summarise how specific language choices reveal the writer’s attitude and shape the overall meaning. Students complete an exit ticket stating one new insight they gained about implicit meaning. Assign homework to analyse a short article of their choice, identifying at least two language features and the attitudes they convey.
