Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: The key stages in the design process: identifying an original design need or how an existing product can be improved, preparing a design brief that accurately describes a design need, finding, gathering and analysing information relevant to a design
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key stages of the design process and their purpose.
  • Explain how to develop a clear design brief and measurable specification.
  • Apply research methods to gather and analyse primary and secondary data.
  • Generate, evaluate and refine design concepts using appropriate tools.
  • Produce a concise design proposal including drawings, a BOM and a risk assessment.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed handouts of a design‑brief template
  • Worksheets for research and evaluation matrices
  • Sketching materials (paper, pencils, coloured pens)
  • Computers with CAD software and internet access
  • Sample everyday product for observation
Introduction:
Begin with a short video showing a common product being redesigned, prompting students to consider possible improvements. Review the previous lesson on problem identification and link it to today’s focus on creating a design brief and gathering evidence. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will produce a concise brief and begin research for a design solution.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Students list three improvements for a familiar product.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Overview of design‑brief components, constraints and success criteria.
  3. Guided activity (15') – In groups, complete a design‑brief template for the product and define measurable specifications.
  4. Research workshop (10') – Demonstrate secondary sources and design a quick primary‑data collection plan; students fill a worksheet.
  5. Concept generation (10') – Brain‑storming and sketching session; ideas recorded on an idea log.
  6. Whole‑class debrief (5') – Groups share briefs and research plans; teacher checks understanding.
Conclusion:
Recap how a clear brief and solid research underpin successful design development. Each group writes one key takeaway on a sticky note as an exit ticket. For homework, students refine their brief and collect at least two pieces of secondary data to bring to the next lesson.
