Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: Consequences of changes in the occupational and geographical mobility of labour
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe occupational and geographical mobility and the factors that influence them.
  • Explain how changes in each type of mobility affect workers, firms and the wider economy.
  • Analyse the consequences of increased or decreased mobility using real‑world examples.
  • Evaluate policy measures that can enhance labour mobility.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop for slides
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed worksheet with summary table
  • Case‑study handout (mining to renewable‑energy example)
  • Sticky notes for group activity
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a brief news clip about the shift from coal mining to renewable‑energy jobs to hook students. Ask them to recall what they know about supply‑side factors that influence employment. Explain that today they will investigate how workers’ ability to move occupations and locations shapes outcomes for individuals, firms and the economy, and that they will be able to identify and evaluate these consequences by the end of the lesson.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick quiz on definitions of occupational and geographical mobility (written on the board).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Slides covering key concepts, factors influencing mobility, and the four mobility‑change scenarios.
  3. Group case‑study analysis (15'): Students work in pairs with the mining‑to‑renewables handout, fill in a simplified consequences table, and discuss why outcomes differ with high vs. low mobility.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10'): Groups share findings; teacher highlights impacts on workers, firms and the economy.
  5. Diagram activity (10'): Using sticky notes, each group creates a flowchart showing the interaction between occupational and geographical mobility and economic outcomes.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Write one positive and one negative consequence of increased occupational mobility.
Conclusion:

Summarise how mobility determines an economy’s ability to adjust to technological and regional changes. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: research a local industry experiencing mobility shifts and write a short paragraph describing the likely economic effects.
