Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: Safe working practices in a school workshop or practical area, including: wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the relevant machine or process such as goggles, visor, face mask, gloves, apron or lab coat, tying long hair back a
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose and types of PPE required for different workshop processes.
  • Explain correct personal hygiene and dress code to minimise hazards.
  • Demonstrate safe set‑up, inspection and use of tools, machines and guards.
  • Apply manual‑handling techniques and emergency procedures in a workshop.
  • Evaluate a checklist to confirm a safe working environment.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed handouts (PPE checklist, safety data sheets)
  • Sample PPE items (goggles, gloves, aprons, face mask)
  • Workshop tools for demo (saw, drill)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a quick “What could go wrong?” brainstorm to activate prior knowledge of workshop hazards. Remind students of the importance of safety for themselves and peers. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to select and use the correct PPE, follow safe set‑up procedures and complete a safety checklist.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write three hazards they have observed in the workshop.
  2. Mini‑lecture with slides (10’) – Overview of PPE types, dress code and personal hygiene.
  3. Demonstration (10’) – Correct PPE for a bandsaw, tool inspection and guard checks.
  4. Group activity (15’) – Teams complete the safety checklist for a mock workstation and present findings.
  5. Manual‑handling demo (10’) – Teacher shows proper lift technique; students practice with light loads.
  6. Emergency equipment walk‑through (5’) – Locate fire extinguisher, eyewash, first‑aid kit and discuss use.
  7. Exit ticket (5’) – One‑sentence reflection on the most important safety step learned.
Conclusion:

Recap the key safety procedures and ask a few students to share their checklist results. Collect exit tickets as a quick retrieval check. For homework, students review the provided safety data sheets and design a one‑page safety poster for a chosen workshop activity.
