Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: work in fashion design, costume design, screen printing, batik or surface pattern
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the full design process from research to evaluation for textile and fashion projects.
  • Apply a chosen textile decoration technique (screen printing, batik, or surface pattern) to create a prototype.
  • Produce a finished garment or fabric piece demonstrating technical skill and originality.
  • Evaluate the final product against IGCSE assessment criteria and reflect on improvements.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for presentations
  • Sketchbooks, pencils, coloured pencils, markers
  • Fabric samples (cotton, linen, silk)
  • Screen printing kit (screens, squeegees, inks, emulsion, exposure unit)
  • Batik supplies (canting, wax, dye pots, protective gloves)
  • Sewing machine, needles, pins, scissors
  • Digital tablet or computer with design software (optional)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual montage of iconic fashion, costume, and printed textiles to spark interest. Review the design process steps students have previously explored, linking them to today’s focus on applying a decoration technique. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will have produced a prototype sample and know the criteria for evaluating its success.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students examine a printed fabric swatch, note the technique used, and record observations in their design journal.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Overview of the design process and key considerations for selecting a decoration technique (screen printing, batik, surface pattern).
  3. Demonstration (15') – Teacher shows a rapid screen‑printing setup and a simple batik wax‑resist step, highlighting safety and timing.
  4. Hands‑on activity (30') – Students choose one technique, prepare their stencil or wax design, and produce a small fabric sample on scrap material.
  5. Peer feedback (10') – Groups rotate, comment on each other’s work using a checklist aligned with the IGCSE criteria.
  6. Reflection & documentation (10') – Learners photograph their sample, write a brief evaluation, and add it to their portfolio.
Conclusion:
Summarise how the prototype illustrates the design process and the strengths of the chosen technique. Students complete an exit ticket stating one improvement they would make next time. Assign homework to develop a mood board and detailed sketch for a full garment that incorporates the technique practiced today.
