Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: demonstrate knowledge of appropriate materials, processes, technologies and resources
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and describe the properties of at least six painting materials and appropriate supports.
  • Explain the purpose and sequence of key painting processes (pre‑paration, underpainting, glazing, impasto, finishing).
  • Apply safe studio practices when handling solvents, varnishes and equipment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute a small mixed‑media study using chosen materials.
Materials Needed:
  • Canvas panels, primed boards, water‑colour paper
  • Acrylic, oil, water‑colour, gouache paints
  • Brushes (natural & synthetic), palette knives, sponges
  • Gesso, acrylic/oil primers, varnish, linseed oil
  • Digital colour‑mixing software (projector screen)
  • Protective aprons, gloves, respirators, ventilation fan
  • Timer/clock, worksheet with safety checklist
Introduction:

Begin with a quick visual showcase of diverse painting surfaces and finishes to spark curiosity. Ask students what determines the choice of paint and support, linking to prior lessons on colour theory. Outline today’s success criteria: correctly name materials, demonstrate safe handling, and produce a brief mixed‑media study.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Quiz on paint types and their drying times (paper).
  2. Teacher demonstration – Surface preparation & underpainting (10').
  3. Student practice – Create a 5 × 5 cm underpainting on a panel (10').
  4. Technique stations – Glazing, impasto, and wet‑on‑wet (15'). Students rotate, applying each technique.
  5. Mixed‑media mini project – Combine acrylic with collage elements; document choices (10').
  6. Health & safety audit – Small groups create a checklist and present key points (5').
  7. Review & exit ticket – Students write one thing they learned and one question (5').
Conclusion:

Recap the material properties, processes, and safety measures covered, highlighting exemplary student work. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a short reflective journal entry on how material choice influences artistic intent for homework.
