Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the impact of stakeholder aims on business decisions
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the concept of stakeholders and differentiate between relative importance and influence.
  • Analyse how the aims of different stakeholder groups shape specific business decisions.
  • Apply an Influence‑Importance matrix to prioritise stakeholder groups in a case study.
  • Evaluate the impact of stakeholder priorities on pricing, product development, location, training and financing decisions.
  • Justify rankings of stakeholder importance and influence using evidence from a scenario.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed stakeholder matrix handouts
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Sticky notes and pens for group work
  • Laptops or tablets (optional)
Introduction:

Begin with a quick think‑pair‑share: “Think of a product you bought recently – who might have influenced that purchase?” Connect this to students’ prior knowledge of stakeholder definitions. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to map stakeholder aims and predict how those aims shape business decisions.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Think‑pair‑share on a recent purchase and list possible stakeholders.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Review definitions of stakeholder, relative importance, influence and introduce the Influence‑Importance matrix.
  3. Guided analysis (15’) – In groups, complete the matrix for the provided case study, rating each stakeholder’s importance and influence.
  4. Whole‑class discussion (10’) – Groups present “Key Players” and discuss how their aims affect pricing, product development, location, training and financing decisions.
  5. Exam technique practice (10’) – Students answer a past‑paper question, explicitly stating stakeholder, aim, and decision impact.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Exit ticket: write one stakeholder, its primary aim, and the likely business decision it influences.
Conclusion:

Recap the key steps of stakeholder analysis and how the matrix helps prioritize actions. Collect the exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: each student selects a local business and completes a stakeholder Influence‑Importance analysis, highlighting at least two decisions affected by stakeholder aims.
