Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: use skills such as tonal drawing, pen and ink, pastels, painting, printmaking and collage
Learning Objective/s:
  • Demonstrate confidence using tonal drawing, pen & ink, pastels, painting, printmaking and collage techniques.
  • Analyse the properties of each medium and how they can be combined effectively.
  • Plan, experiment, and evaluate artwork in line with IGCSE assessment criteria.
  • Produce a cohesive portfolio that shows technical skill, creativity and personal expression.
Materials Needed:
  • Graphite pencils, charcoal, blending stumps and drawing paper (A4‑A3).
  • India ink, waterproof pens, dip pens, nibs and ink brushes.
  • Soft, oil and hard pastels with fixative spray.
  • Acrylic, watercolor and gouache paints with synthetic & natural brushes, palette and canvas board.
  • Linoleum blocks, carving tools, ink rollers and printing paper.
  • Assorted papers, fabric scraps, glue sticks, scissors and mounting board.
  • Protective aprons, gloves and good ventilation for safety.
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual montage of mixed‑media artworks to spark curiosity about combining techniques. Ask students to recall their recent experiences with tonal drawing or painting and share one strength they have developed. Explain that today they will explore how different media can be layered to create depth and texture, and they will be assessed on planning, execution, and reflective evaluation.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students complete a rapid value‑scale sketch to activate tonal awareness.
  2. Mini‑lecture & demo (10'): Teacher demonstrates layering ink washes over a tonal drawing and adds pastel highlights.
  3. Guided practice (20'): Small groups experiment with a chosen medium (ink, pastel, or paint) to create a mixed‑media study, receiving real‑time feedback.
  4. Independent work (15'): Students develop their own composition that integrates at least two media, documenting their process.
  5. Peer critique (5'): Pairs exchange work, using a checklist to comment on technique, combination of media, and visual impact.
  6. Reflection & exit ticket (5'): Learners write one technique they will apply in their portfolio and note any challenges faced.
Conclusion:
Recap how layering tonal drawing, ink washes and pastel highlights can enhance depth and texture in a composition. Students complete an exit ticket describing one technique they will use in their next portfolio piece. For homework, they sketch a thumbnail plan that integrates at least two of the media explored today, preparing a brief artist’s statement for the upcoming portfolio session.
