Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Sociology
Lesson Topic: Globalisation, power and politics
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the four dimensions of globalisation (economic, cultural, political, technological).
  • Analyse key debates about globalisation’s impact on inequality, culture, and state sovereignty.
  • Compare major sociological perspectives on globalisation and power.
  • Evaluate the roles of state, corporate and civil‑society actors in global political processes.
  • Apply a chosen perspective to a real‑world example such as a trade agreement or transnational protest.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and PowerPoint slides
  • Handout summarising the four sociological perspectives
  • World map or digital globe
  • Case‑study worksheets (e.g., MNC impact, digital activism)
  • Flip chart and markers
  • Short video clip on global digital activism
  • Online articles (e.g., WTO report) for homework
Introduction:

Begin with a recent headline about a multinational corporation’s influence on a local community to hook interest. Ask students to share personal experiences of global products or media, linking to prior knowledge of economic interdependence. Explain that today they will identify how power operates through state, corporate and civil‑society actors and will be assessed on their ability to compare sociological explanations.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list three examples of globalisation they encounter daily.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Define economic, cultural, political, and technological dimensions; outline key debates using slides.
  3. Group case‑study analysis (15'): Small groups examine a provided case (e.g., a trade agreement) and identify state, corporate and civil‑society power actors.
  4. Perspective carousel (15'): Stations with brief summaries of functionalist, Marxist, constructivist, and post‑colonial perspectives; groups rotate, noting strengths and limitations.
  5. Whole‑class synthesis (10'): Groups share findings; class compares how each perspective explains the power dynamics in the case study.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Individually write one insight gained and one question they still have.
Conclusion:

Recap the main dimensions of globalisation and the contrasting ways sociologists view power. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign homework: read a short article on a current global issue and write a brief analysis using one of the perspectives discussed.
