  • Describe the MBO process and its seven key steps.
  • Explain how MBO aligns individual goals with organisational strategy.
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of using MBO.
  • Apply SMART criteria to formulate clear individual objectives.

Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What motivates you to achieve a work goal?” Connect responses to the idea of linking personal targets with business strategy. Explain that today’s lesson will explore Management by Objectives, and students will demonstrate how to set SMART objectives and evaluate MBO’s usefulness.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write a personal goal and discuss how it supports a larger aim.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Overview of MBO concept, strategic alignment, and the seven implementation steps.
  3. Guided activity (15') – In pairs, map the MBO steps onto a case study using a flowchart.
  4. SMART workshop (10') – Convert a vague objective into a SMART one; peer review.
  5. Advantages/Disadvantages debate (10') – Groups list pros and cons on flip chart and discuss critical success factors.
  6. Monitoring role‑play (10') – Simulate a quarterly review meeting focusing on feedback and adjustments.
  7. Recap & exit ticket (5') – Students write one key takeaway and one lingering question on a sticky note.
Conclusion:
Summarise how MBO creates a clear link between strategy and individual performance while requiring ongoing feedback. Collect exit tickets as a quick retrieval check, and assign homework: draft SMART objectives for a hypothetical project to reinforce today’s learning.
