Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the purpose of leadership
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the four primary purposes of leadership in organisations.
  • Explain how different leadership styles support these purposes.
  • Analyse a real‑world case to identify how leadership aligns vision, motivation, change management and culture.
  • Evaluate the impact of effective leadership on employee morale, productivity and innovation.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of leadership purposes and styles
  • Case‑study worksheet (technology firm product launch)
  • Sticky notes for brainstorming
  • Laptop for video/example
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What qualities do you think make a great leader?” Connect to students’ prior knowledge of famous business leaders and outline that today they will identify the core purposes of leadership and how styles align with organisational goals. Success will be demonstrated by accurately analysing a case study and contributing to a class diagram.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list three leadership qualities on sticky notes; share and cluster on board.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Define leadership and present the four purposes using a slide and diagram.
  3. Interactive discussion (8’) – Compare autocratic, democratic, transformational and laissez‑faire styles and match each to a purpose.
  4. Case study analysis (15’) – In pairs, read the technology‑firm example and complete a worksheet identifying vision, motivation, change management and culture.
  5. Group synthesis (7’) – Teams create a quick flowchart on poster paper showing how the leadership purpose links to business success.
  6. Check for understanding (5’) – Whole‑class quiz (Kahoot) on key concepts.
Conclusion:
Recap the four purposes of leadership and how the chosen style supported the tech firm’s launch. Students complete an exit ticket by writing one way they could apply a leadership purpose in a future project. Assign homework: research a local business leader and prepare a brief report linking their style to organisational outcomes.
