| Subject: Business |
| Lesson Topic: the standard methods of communication used in business: spoken, written, electronic and visual |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe the key characteristics, advantages and limitations of spoken, written, electronic and visual communication.
- Compare the speed, recordability and personal touch of each communication method.
- Select the most appropriate communication method for a given business scenario, justifying the choice.
- Analyse how combining different methods can enhance message clarity and impact.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector or interactive whiteboard
- PowerPoint presentation with method comparison table
- Handout summarising advantages/limitations of each method
- Sample business scenarios (printed cards)
- Sticky notes or digital polling tool for quick checks
|
Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip showing a miscommunication in a workplace, then ask students what went wrong. Link to prior knowledge of basic business communication and set the success criteria: students will be able to identify, compare and choose appropriate communication methods.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑now (5'): Students list everyday communication methods on sticky notes; teacher clusters responses.
- Mini‑lecture (10'): Present the four methods with examples, using the PowerPoint comparison table.
- Group activity (15'): Each group receives a business scenario card and decides the best communication method(s), recording justification on a worksheet.
- Gallery walk (5'): Groups display their decisions; peers add comments using sticky notes.
- Whole‑class debrief (10'): Discuss selections, highlight advantages/limitations, and introduce the decision‑flowchart.
- Quick check (5'): Digital poll or exit ticket asking which method is fastest and which provides the strongest record.
|
Conclusion:
Recap the four communication methods and the key factors influencing their use. Students complete an exit ticket summarising one scenario where they would combine written and visual communication. Assign homework: research a real company’s communication mix and prepare a brief report.
