Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: understand how textiles and fashion design communicate ideas
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how colour, texture, and pattern convey ideas and cultural meanings in fashion.
  • Analyze the influence of function, context, and symbolism on textile choices.
  • Apply the design process to develop a brief, sketch, and prototype that communicates a specific message.
  • Evaluate a finished textile piece against IGCSE assessment criteria, reflecting on communication effectiveness.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed handouts of fabric texture table and assessment criteria
  • Fabric swatches (cotton, silk, denim, leather, wool)
  • Sketchbooks, pencils, coloured markers
  • Scissors, measuring tape, sewing needles & thread
  • Mood‑board paper or poster board and magazines
  • Reflective journal worksheets
Introduction:

Begin with a quick visual poll: show images of iconic garments and ask students what emotions or messages they perceive. Recall previous lessons on colour theory and cultural symbols, linking them to fashion communication. Explain that today’s success criteria are to identify how colour, texture and context convey ideas, and to produce a brief design concept that demonstrates this understanding.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5’) – Students view three fashion images and write one word describing the idea each conveys.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present key concepts: function vs aesthetic, symbolism of colour/texture, cultural context, using projector and handouts.
  3. Group activity – Mood board creation (15’) – Teams assemble colour palettes and cultural motifs on poster board, citing intended messages.
  4. Fabric exploration (10’) – Swatch testing: students handle provided fabrics, note texture, drape, and associated meanings.
  5. Design brief & sketching (20’) – Individually write a brief linking a chosen idea to colour and fabric, then produce thumbnail sketches and a detailed drawing with annotations.
  6. Prototype planning (10’) – Outline steps to create a small sample (e.g., scarf) and discuss material selection.
  7. Peer review (10’) – Pairs evaluate each other's concepts against IGCSE criteria, providing feedback.
  8. Reflection & exit ticket (5’) – Students complete a short journal entry: “What idea does my design communicate and how effectively?”
Conclusion:

Summarise how colour, texture and cultural references work together to communicate ideas in fashion. Invite a few students to share their design concepts and the intended message. For the exit ticket, have learners write one key insight and a next step for their prototype. Homework: develop a physical sample or a detailed digital mock‑up of the design.
