Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: use appropriate materials and techniques to communicate intention effectively
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify properties of major fibre types and explain their suitability for specific design intentions.
  • Select and apply appropriate surface‑decoration and construction techniques to convey a clear design concept.
  • Develop a design brief, mood board, and work plan, documenting the process and evaluating the final textile piece against its intended communication.
Materials Needed:
  • Assorted fabric swatches (cotton, wool, silk, polyester, rayon)
  • Sewing needles, pins, and hand‑sewing kits
  • Sewing machines
  • Embroidery threads, fabric dyes, and paints
  • Scissors, fabric cutters, measuring tape
  • Iron and heat‑setting equipment
  • Sketchbooks, mood‑board paper, coloured pencils
  • Projector or screen for visual examples
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual slideshow of iconic fashion pieces that use fabric manipulation to convey identity, asking students what messages the fabrics communicate. Recall previous lessons on fibre properties and basic stitching techniques. Today students will plan and begin a wearable textile project, demonstrating they can choose suitable materials and techniques to express a clear artistic intention.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Examine a set of fabric samples and note properties related to communication.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Review fibre characteristics, decorative and construction techniques, linking them to design intent.
  3. Design brief analysis (10') – In pairs, read the “Identity Through Fabric” brief, discuss intended messages, and outline key requirements.
  4. Research & mood board (15') – Gather visual references, create mood boards and colour palettes, recording choices.
  5. Material & technique selection (10') – Choose at least two fabric types and corresponding decoration and construction techniques; justify selections in writing.
  6. Planning & start of construction (20') – Draft a work plan with timeline, sketch, and begin basic construction (cutting, stitching) while teacher circulates for formative feedback.
Conclusion:
To close, we recap how fibre properties and chosen techniques support the intended narrative of each design. Students complete an exit ticket noting one material and one technique they will use and why it aligns with their concept. For homework, they will finish their mood board and draft a detailed work plan for the next class.
