Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business
Lesson Topic: the impact of diversity and equality in the workplace on a business
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the UK legal framework that governs workplace diversity and equality.
  • Explain the key benefits and challenges of diversity and equality for employee morale and business performance.
  • Analyse how a diversity and inclusion strategy can influence productivity and financial outcomes.
  • Evaluate the TechCo case study and suggest improvements to its D&I approach.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of the TechCo case study
  • Diversity audit worksheet (template)
  • Laptop for presentation
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a short video clip showing a company that boosted revenue after improving diversity. Ask students what they already know about equality legislation and why it matters to businesses. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify legal requirements, weigh benefits and challenges, and evaluate real‑world D&I strategies.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Quick Kahoot quiz on the Equality Act 2010 and protected characteristics.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Define diversity, equality, inclusion; outline key UK legislation and its impact on business policies.
  3. Group activity (15’) – Conduct a mock diversity audit using the worksheet on a fictitious company; identify gaps.
  4. Case study analysis (15’) – In pairs, examine the TechCo data, discuss results, and answer two guided questions.
  5. Synthesis discussion (10’) – Whole‑class debrief linking audit findings and case‑study outcomes to morale, productivity and financial performance.
  6. Exit ticket (5’) – Write one actionable step a business could take to improve inclusion.
Conclusion:

Summarise how legal compliance forms the baseline for D&I and how strategic initiatives drive creativity, engagement and profitability. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: each student drafts a brief D&I action plan for a business of their choice, citing at least one benefit and one potential challenge.
