Date: 25/02/2026 |
| Subject: Art and Design |
| Lesson Topic: develop knowledge and skills in media, processes and techniques to create visual meaning through graphic communication |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe visual language elements (line, shape, colour, texture, space, typography) and their communicative functions.
- Analyse how symbolism, audience, and context influence graphic design meaning.
- Apply a systematic design process (research, concept, development, production, evaluation) using at least two media.
- Produce a graphic communication piece (poster, icon set, or brand identity) demonstrating technical skill and audience awareness.
- Reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of the design against defined assessment criteria.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector or interactive whiteboard
- Sketchbooks and drawing pencils
- Ink pens, markers, brushes
- Computers with vector graphic software (e.g., Illustrator or free alternative)
- Screen‑printing kit (screen, squeegee, inks)
- Printed handouts of visual‑language reference sheets
- Samples of existing graphic designs for analysis
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual quiz showing iconic logos and ask students what messages each conveys. Recall previous work on visual elements and how they create meaning. Today’s goal is to develop and apply a full graphic communication process, and students will be assessed on concept development, technical skill, and audience awareness.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑now (5’) – Visual logo quiz and brief discussion.
- Mini‑lecture (10’) – Review visual language, symbolism, audience, and the five‑stage design process.
- Research & Inspiration (10’) – Students gather reference images and complete a short audience brief.
- Concept Development (10’) – Sketch thumbnails and create a mood board; teacher circulates for feedback.
- Design Development (10’) – Choose media (ink or digital) and begin refining a selected thumbnail; demonstrate basic techniques.
- Production (10’) – Students produce a small poster or icon set using chosen media; peer check for technical accuracy.
- Evaluation & Reflection (5’) – Exit ticket: one strength, one area to improve, and next step.
|
Conclusion:
Summarise how the selected visual elements and process stages contributed to the final message. Students submit their exit tickets and a photo of their work for assessment. For homework, they will expand their design into a full poster or screen‑printed flyer, documenting each stage.
