Date: 25/02/2026 |
| Subject: Art and Design |
| Lesson Topic: record their own experiences and observations from first-hand and secondary resources and personal research |
Learning Objective/s:
- Record first‑hand observations and secondary information systematically.
- Analyse and compare primary and secondary resources to inform artistic decisions.
- Reflect on personal research findings and integrate them into design concepts.
- Document the research process using a structured diary template.
- Evaluate ethical considerations when using external references.
|
Materials Needed:
- Sketchbooks or digital notebooks
- Cameras or smartphones for photography
- Laptops/tablets with internet access
- Printed research diary template
- Colour pens/highlighters
- Reference books or online articles
|
Introduction:
Begin with a brief discussion about how artists draw inspiration from real‑world experiences and research. Recall previous work where students documented observations in sketchbooks. Explain that today they will create a structured research diary that captures first‑hand, secondary and personal research, and will be assessed on completeness, analysis and reflection.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑now (5'): Students list recent places they observed and share one detail.
- Mini‑lecture (10'): Explain differences between primary, secondary and personal research and introduce the diary template.
- Guided practice (15'): In pairs, plan a quick observation walk, take sketches/photos, and fill the first‑hand section.
- Research activity (15'): Use laptops to locate a secondary source related to the observation, fill the secondary section, and discuss citation.
- Reflection (10'): Complete the personal research column and write a brief reflection linking observations to design ideas.
- Peer review (10'): Exchange diaries, check for completeness using the assessment checklist.
- Consolidation (5'): Teacher summarises the cycle and answers final questions.
|
Conclusion:
Summarise the five‑stage cycle of observation, documentation, analysis, reflection and artistic decision. For the exit ticket, each student writes one actionable insight they will apply to their upcoming project. Homework: expand the diary entry with additional secondary sources and prepare a mood board.
