| Grade: 10 |
Date: 25/02/2026 |
| Subject: Art and Design |
| Lesson Topic: use skills such as drawing, photography, photo editing, printmaking, typography and lettering, product design and packaging construction |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe the graphic communication process from brief analysis to evaluation.
- Apply drawing, photography and digital editing techniques to develop a visual solution.
- Create a product‑package prototype using dielines, cardboard and appropriate adhesives.
- Critically evaluate the effectiveness of visual communication against the brief and document reflections.
|
Materials Needed:
- Sketchbooks and drawing pencils
- Digital cameras or smartphones
- Computers with Photoshop/Illustrator installed
- Cardstock, cardboard, glue and cutting tools
- Screen‑printing kit (ink, squeegee, fabric/paper)
- Projector and printed handout of the brief
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual montage of iconic brand packaging and typographic posters to spark interest. Ask students to recall recent projects where they combined hand‑drawn and digital elements. Explain that today they will explore the full graphic communication workflow and will be assessed on research, technical skill, creativity and clear communication.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑now (5') – Examine the provided brief and identify the target audience and key communication goals.
- Mini‑lecture (10') – Overview of the graphic communication process and key techniques (drawing, photography, editing, typography, packaging).
- Research & brainstorming (15') – Create mind‑maps and thumbnail sketches in sketchbooks.
- Digital development (20') – Photograph selected objects, edit images, experiment with type and layout using Photoshop/Illustrator.
- Physical prototype (15') – Produce a dieline, cut cardboard, assemble a package prototype and apply basic screen‑printing.
- Peer critique & reflection (10') – Groups evaluate each other with a rubric, noting strengths and areas for improvement.
|
Conclusion:
Recap how each stage contributed to a cohesive visual message and reinforce the success criteria. Students complete an exit ticket stating one strength and one area to improve in their work. For homework, refine the prototype and write a brief reflective commentary for the portfolio.
