Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: work in painting, drawing, assemblage/collage, printmaking or mixed media
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe key elements and principles of design relevant to painting and mixed media.
  • Apply a range of techniques (glazing, impasto, collage layering) to create a finished artwork.
  • Plan and document the artistic process from research through to final evaluation.
  • Evaluate material choices and reflect on strengths and areas for improvement.
Materials Needed:
  • Acrylic, oil, and watercolour paints
  • Canvas, wood panels, watercolour paper, cardboard
  • Brushes, palette knives, masking fluid/tape
  • Sketchbooks and pencils for thumbnails
  • Fixative spray and varnish
  • Protective aprons, gloves, and good ventilation
Introduction:

Begin with a quick colour‑mixing challenge to spark curiosity about colour relationships. Review students’ prior experience with sketching and basic painting techniques, linking them to today’s mixed‑media focus. Explain that success will be measured by a clear plan, skillful execution, and thoughtful reflection.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now – Colour mixing workshop (5’) – students create a harmonious palette of 12 colours.
  2. Research & Inspiration discussion (10’) – share mood boards and identify visual language for the brief.
  3. Thumbnail sketching (15’) – produce 5‑8 quick ideas, followed by brief peer feedback.
  4. Material experimentation (15’) – test small samples of chosen media on intended supports; record observations.
  5. Planning & Execution (30’) – develop a detailed drawing or digital mock‑up, then begin painting/assemblage according to the plan.
  6. Evaluation & Reflection (10’) – compare finished piece to the original brief, complete a reflective statement, and submit an exit ticket.
Conclusion:

Recap the key techniques used and how they supported the intended visual message. Students complete an exit ticket summarising one success and one challenge they faced. Assign a brief portfolio entry where they photograph their work and expand the reflective statement for homework.
