| Subject: Art and Design |
| Lesson Topic: explore and experiment with a wide range of different media, techniques and processes including recycled materials |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe a range of painting media and their properties.
- Apply at least three techniques (e.g., glazing, impasto, collage integration) in a mixed‑media study.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of recycled materials in enhancing texture and conceptual meaning.
- Reflect on personal artistic choices and document the process in a reflective log.
|
Materials Needed:
- Acrylic, watercolor, and oil paints (small sets)
- Variety of brushes (flat, round, fan) and palette knives
- PVA glue, acrylic medium, hot‑glue gun
- Cardboard, paper scraps, fabric pieces, plastic lids (recycled items)
- Sketchbooks and thumbnail paper
- Palette, mixing trays, water containers
- Protective gloves and aprons
- Projector or screen for demonstration
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick slideshow of striking mixed‑media artworks that incorporate recycled objects, prompting students to notice how everyday waste can become visual texture. Recall previous lessons on basic brushwork and colour mixing, then outline today’s success criteria: students will experiment with at least two new techniques and produce a small study that integrates a recycled element.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑Now (5’) – Students sketch a quick thumbnail of a subject they will later develop, noting possible recycled materials.
- Media Overview (10’) – Teacher demonstrates key properties of acrylic, watercolor, oil, and shows how to prepare recycled surfaces.
- Technique Stations (20’) – Four stations (glazing, impasto, collage integration, stamping with recycled textures); students rotate, creating small studies (5’ each) and recording observations.
- Guided Experimentation (15’) – Students choose one technique and a recycled material to create a 15 cm mixed‑media study, applying safety guidelines.
- Peer Review (10’) – Pairs exchange work, using a checklist to comment on technique use and material integration.
- Reflection & Log (5’) – Students fill out the reflective log template, noting successes and next steps.
- Clean‑up & Safety Check (5’) – Properly clean brushes, store materials, and discuss waste disposal.
|
Conclusion:
Summarise how the chosen techniques altered colour, texture and depth, and ask a few students to share one insight from their log. Collect an exit ticket where each learner writes the next technique they will explore at home. Assign a brief homework: create a colour‑temperature study using only recycled paper as the painting surface.
