Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: select, review and refine work throughout the whole process to produce a personal and resolved response
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the stages of the creative process and their purpose.
  • Apply assessment criteria to evaluate and refine a painting.
  • Select appropriate materials and techniques to develop a personal response.
  • Demonstrate effective peer‑review and self‑reflection strategies.
  • Produce a finished artwork that shows intentional use of colour, texture and composition.
Materials Needed:
  • Supports: canvas, board, paper
  • Acrylic, oil, watercolor, gouache paints
  • Brushes, palette knives, sponges, rags
  • Mixing palettes, water containers, drop cloths
  • Protective aprons, gloves and good ventilation
  • Sketchbooks or visual diaries
  • Projector and printed assessment checklist
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:

Begin with a quick visual montage of completed artworks that evolved dramatically from sketch to final piece, prompting students to consider “What changed and why?”. Recall the previous lesson’s focus on idea generation and sketching. Explain that today they will learn how to systematically review and refine their work to achieve a personal, resolved response, and that success will be measured by clear documentation and peer feedback.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students create a rapid 2‑minute sketch of a personal theme.
  2. Creative process overview (10'): Teacher projects a flowchart and highlights key stages.
  3. Material selection & colour‑mixing diary (15'): Students choose supports, test paints, and record results.
  4. Peer review session (10'): Using the “What works / What could improve / Suggestions” sheet, pairs critique each other’s sketches.
  5. Refinement techniques demo (10'): Demonstrate layering, texture, and colour harmony.
  6. Studio work – develop and refine piece (30'): Apply feedback, document revisions in visual diary.
  7. Reflection & presentation prep (10'): Write a brief oral explanation linking research, process, and personal response.
  8. Exit ticket (5'): Answer one reflection prompt from the provided list.
Conclusion:

Recap the importance of systematic review and how each refinement step strengthens the personal voice of the artwork. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a homework task: complete a short “Reflection Journal” entry documenting one major change made during today’s studio time and why it improved the piece.
