Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: develop understanding of material, trends, manufacturing, local crafts and cultural factors
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key properties and typical uses of at least five textile fibres.
  • Analyze how historical, cultural and technological factors shape fashion trends.
  • Evaluate manufacturing processes for sustainability and design feasibility.
  • Interpret local craft techniques and incorporate cultural symbolism into textile design.
  • Apply research findings to create a prototype garment or textile piece.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Sample fibre swatches (cotton, wool, silk, linen, polyester, viscose)
  • Worksheets for property testing
  • Magazine cut‑outs, fabric scraps, glue, poster board for trend boards
  • Laptops or tablets for digital research
  • Camera or smartphone for documentation
  • Assessment rubric handout
Introduction:

Begin with a quick visual montage of historic and contemporary fashion pieces to spark curiosity. Ask students to recall which fabrics they have worked with and what properties mattered most. Explain that today they will explore material properties, trends, manufacturing and cultural influences, and that success will be shown by a completed trend board and a brief design proposal.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list three fabrics they know and one property for each on sticky notes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of fibre properties and examples using the provided table (projector).
  3. Hands‑on material investigation (15'): Test absorbency and drape of fibre samples; record observations on worksheets.
  4. Trend analysis activity (12'): In groups, create a quick “Eco‑Future” trend board using magazine cut‑outs and digital images.
  5. Local craft showcase (10'): Guest artisan demonstration (or video) of a regional technique; students note cultural symbols.
  6. Consolidation & assessment (8'): Groups present their trend board, discuss material choices, and receive feedback using the rubric.
Conclusion:

Summarise how material properties, trends and cultural contexts inform design decisions. Students complete an exit ticket stating one new insight and one action for their upcoming design project. For homework, they research a sustainable fabric and prepare a brief justification for its use in a future garment.
