Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify the main idea and supporting details in a writing prompt.
  • Organise ideas into a paragraph with a clear topic, supporting, and concluding sentence.
  • Apply at least three appropriate linking devices to connect sentences and paragraphs.
  • Produce an 80‑100 word paragraph that meets IGCSE length and coherence standards.
  • Self‑edit the paragraph for logical flow, correct use of linking devices, and grammatical accuracy.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout with a table of linking devices
  • Worksheet containing the practice tasks
  • Sample essay excerpt for analysis
  • Sticky notes for peer feedback
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What makes a paragraph easy to follow?” Use responses to highlight the role of logical sequencing and linking words. Recall the previous lesson on paragraph structure and explain that today learners will focus on selecting and organising ideas while mastering a range of linking devices. Success criteria: students will write a coherent paragraph of 80‑100 words using at least two different linking devices correctly.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Write two simple sentences and link them using a chosen linking device; share a few examples.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Review paragraph components and introduce the six categories of linking devices with examples.
  3. Guided brainstorming (15'): In pairs, students complete a mind‑map for the prompt “Faida za kusoma vitabu vya fasihi,” selecting key ideas and appropriate linking devices.
  4. Writing activity (15'): Individually compose an 80‑word paragraph using the brainstormed ideas and at least two linking devices.
  5. Peer review (10'): Exchange paragraphs, use a checklist to verify paragraph structure and correct use of linking devices; provide feedback on sticky notes.
  6. Whole‑class feedback (5'): Discuss common strengths and errors observed during peer review.
Conclusion:

Summarise how the chosen linking devices helped to create logical flow and cohesion in the paragraphs written today. For the exit ticket, ask each student to write one linking device they found most useful and why. Homework: draft a 250‑word essay introduction on “Mazingira na maendeleo,” incorporating three different linking devices.
