Date: 25/02/2026 |
| Subject: Art and Design |
| Lesson Topic: explore techniques such as depth of field, lighting, exposure, aperture/shutter speed, angle and viewpoint, composition, framing and editing |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO affect exposure and depth of field.
- Explain the impact of lighting direction, quality, and colour temperature on mood.
- Apply composition rules (rule of thirds, leading lines, framing) to create balanced photographs.
- Demonstrate how angle and viewpoint alter the narrative of an image.
- Edit images using basic non‑destructive techniques to enhance exposure and colour.
|
Materials Needed:
- DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses
- Tripod and external flash/LED light
- Reflectors and diffusers
- Projector or whiteboard for diagrams
- Handout with depth‑of‑field and lighting diagrams
- Computers with free editing software (e.g., GIMP)
- Printed worksheet for the practical activities
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick showcase of striking photographs that use dramatic depth of field and lighting. Ask students to recall how they previously adjusted aperture and shutter speed in earlier lessons. Explain that today they will master how these settings, together with angle, composition and basic editing, create compelling images. Success will be measured by a portfolio of six images demonstrating each technique.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑now (5') – View a series of photos and identify the primary technique used.
- Mini‑lecture (15') – Review the exposure triangle, depth of field, and lighting fundamentals with diagrams.
- Guided practice (20') – In pairs, experiment with aperture settings to produce shallow vs. deep DoF portraits.
- Lighting stations (15') – Rotate through stations using a single light source, reflectors, and diffusers to observe shadow changes.
- Angle & composition shoot (20') – Photograph a set object from eye level, high, and low angles while applying the rule of thirds and leading lines.
- Editing demo (10') – Model basic crop, exposure adjustment, and colour correction in free software.
- Independent edit (10') – Students edit their own images, saving non‑destructive versions.
- Check for understanding (5') – Gallery walk with peer feedback using a simple rubric.
|
Conclusion:
Summarise how aperture, lighting, angle and composition work together to shape a photograph's impact. For the exit ticket, each student writes one tip they will apply in future shoots. Homework: capture a series of three images each demonstrating a different technique and upload them to the class folder for the next lesson.
