| Lesson Topic: understand relevant textile and fashion genres, styles and techniques used by designers past and present |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe major textile and fashion genres, styles, and techniques from historical to contemporary contexts.
- Analyse how designers apply traditional and modern techniques in their work.
- Evaluate sustainable and ethical practices in textile design.
- Apply a chosen technique to create a prototype garment or fabric sample.
- Reflect on cultural influences in fashion design.
|
Materials Needed:
- Projector and screen
- Whiteboard and markers
- Printed handouts with timeline and technique summaries
- Fabric swatches (natural & synthetic)
- Natural dye kits (plant pigments)
- Scissors, measuring tape, pattern paper
- Sketchbooks and coloured pencils
- Laptop with internet access for research

Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual hook of striking runway looks that blend traditional textiles with modern tech. Ask students to recall any fashion styles they’ve seen that use unusual fabrics or techniques, linking to prior knowledge of basic textile terms. Explain that today they will explore the evolution of textile genres and learn how to apply sustainable practices, with success measured by a brief presentation and a hands‑on prototype.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑Now (5') – Students list three fashion styles they know and share; teacher notes connections to textile techniques.
- Mini‑lecture with slides (15') – Overview of historical genres, key designers, and emerging sustainable techniques.
- Group research activity (20') – Teams investigate a historical technique or contemporary designer and prepare a 2‑minute visual presentation.
- Hands‑on sustainable dyeing (20') – Students experiment with natural pigments on fabric swatches, recording colour change and process notes.
- Design challenge (15') – Using zero‑waste pattern making, each student sketches a small garment concept that incorporates at least one learned technique.
- Plenary & reflection (5') – Recap key ideas; exit ticket: write one way they will incorporate sustainability in future designs.
|
Conclusion:
Summarise how textile genres have evolved and the role of sustainable practices in contemporary fashion. Students submit their exit tickets and briefly share their design concepts. For homework, they will create a mood board that fuses a traditional motif with a modern digital print, preparing to develop a prototype in the next lesson.
