Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: create designs considering texture, shape, colour and movement
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how texture, shape, colour, and movement influence three‑dimensional design.
  • Apply the six‑stage design process to develop a 3‑D artwork.
  • Evaluate material choices and finishing techniques against the design brief.
  • Communicate design decisions through sketches, material tests, and a reflective journal.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Sketchbooks and drawing pencils
  • Coloured pencils / markers
  • Clay (earthenware or polymer)
  • Wood blocks or planks
  • Wire and metal cutters
  • Acrylic paints and brushes
  • Texture sample board (fabric, sandpaper, etc.)
  • Process journals or digital camera for documentation
Introduction:

Begin with a striking video of kinetic sculptures to spark curiosity about movement in 3‑D art. Ask students to recall recent projects where they used texture or colour to change a form’s impact. Explain that today they will design a small sculpture that deliberately combines texture, shape, colour and movement, and that success will be measured by a completed maquette and a concise process journal.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Quick sketch of an everyday object, highlighting texture and shape.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Review key concepts (texture, shape, colour, movement) and outline the six‑stage design process.
  3. Research & Mood‑board (15') – Students collect visual references (online or magazines) and create a mood board that links to the design brief.
  4. Material Exploration (20') – Hands‑on testing of clay, wood, wire, and colour washes; record observations on texture effects and structural properties.
  5. Model Making (30') – Build a small maquette applying the explored textures, colours, and implied movement; teacher circulates for formative feedback.
  6. Reflection & Presentation Prep (10') – Complete a process‑journal entry and prepare a 1‑minute oral explanation of design choices.
Conclusion:

Gather the class to recap how texture, shape, colour and movement were integrated into each maquette. Students submit an exit ticket stating one design decision they would refine next time. For homework, ask them to photograph their maquette, add a brief reflective caption, and begin planning a larger final piece.
