Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: work in sculpture/ceramics, product design, architectural design, craft design or jewellery and fashion accessories
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and describe the five stages of the 3‑D design process.
  • Analyse material properties and select appropriate techniques for a chosen design area.
  • Produce a design brief, sketch series and a scale model for a 3‑D project.
  • Apply safety procedures when using tools, equipment and materials.
  • Evaluate a finished piece against the brief and reflect on improvements.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Sketchbooks, pencils, rulers, graph paper
  • Modelling clay, cardboard, balsa wood
  • Access to a 3‑D printer (optional demo)
  • Safety goggles, gloves, aprons
  • Handout of the 3‑D design process flowchart
Introduction:

Begin with a quick visual montage of striking 3‑D artworks to spark curiosity. Ask learners what makes an object “three‑dimensional” and link this to prior knowledge of basic shape and volume. Explain that today they will explore the full design cycle and be assessed on a clear brief, model and reflection.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list the five stages of the 3‑D design process from memory on a sticky note.
  2. Mini‑lecture & visual showcase (10'): Teacher presents the five stages, highlights each design area and discusses material/technique options.
  3. Group brief & sketching activity (15'): In small groups, students choose a design area, write a brief, and produce three quick sketches with annotations.
  4. Modelling demonstration (10'): Teacher models a simple scale model using cardboard/clay, emphasising orthographic drawing links and safety rules.
  5. Reflection & exit ticket (5'): Groups evaluate their sketches and model against the brief, write one improvement point on a slip of paper.
Conclusion:

Recap the five design stages and how material choice influences technique and safety. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a homework task: research a historical 3‑D style and prepare a one‑page portfolio entry documenting inspiration, material choice and a brief evaluation.
