Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: demonstrate understanding of perspective, scale and colour
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how linear perspective creates depth and identify one‑, two‑, and three‑point types.
  • Apply scale ratios to convert real measurements to drawing dimensions and include a scale legend.
  • Analyse colour relationships (complementary, analogous, triadic) and select appropriate value and saturation for visual hierarchy.
  • Produce a graphic composition that integrates accurate perspective, correct scale, and a cohesive colour scheme.
Materials Needed:
  • Sketchbooks or drawing paper
  • Graphite pencils, erasers, ruler, scale ruler
  • Colour pencils or markers (limited palette)
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Handouts with perspective grids and scale tables
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual comparison of a flat sketch and a 3‑D rendered image to spark curiosity about how artists create depth. Review students’ prior experience with basic horizon lines and colour wheels, linking this to today’s focus. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will demonstrate accurate perspective, apply correct scale, and choose an effective colour scheme for a graphic communication piece.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Examine a mixed‑media poster and note how perspective, scale, and colour guide the viewer.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Demonstrate one‑point and two‑point perspective using the projector; introduce scale ratios and colour models.
  3. Guided practice (15') – In pairs, draw a simple street scene applying a chosen perspective, calculate scale for a building, and draft a limited colour palette.
  4. Peer review (10') – Exchange work, use a checklist to verify horizon line, scale legend, and colour hierarchy.
  5. Independent task (15') – Refine the composition, add value and saturation adjustments, and complete a brief process log.
  6. Whole‑class reflection (5') – Discuss common challenges and showcase exemplary work.
Conclusion:
Summarise how accurate perspective, proper scaling, and purposeful colour choices combine to strengthen graphic communication. Ask each student to write one takeaway on an exit ticket. Assign homework to create a scaled floor‑plan of a room using a chosen perspective and a three‑colour scheme.
