Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: create images considering space, balance and colour relationships
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how space creates depth using foreground, middle ground, background and perspective techniques.
  • Explain the different types of balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial) and their impact on composition.
  • Apply colour relationship principles (complementary, analogous, triadic, warm‑cool) to develop a harmonious palette.
  • Produce a finished painting that integrates space, balance and colour effectively.
Materials Needed:
  • A3 or larger drawing paper
  • Graphite pencils and erasers
  • Acrylic or watercolor paints and brushes
  • Colour wheel reference chart
  • Rulers and perspective grids
  • Palette and mixing trays
  • Projector or screen for visual examples
  • Sketching pencils and markers for thumbnails
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual slideshow of artworks that masterfully use space, balance and colour to capture attention. Ask students to recall how they have previously created depth or balanced compositions in earlier projects. Explain that today they will plan and execute a painting that deliberately applies these three design principles, and success will be judged by a clear, annotated final piece.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students view examples and note which design principles are evident.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Review space, balance types, and colour relationships with the colour wheel.
  3. Planning (15’) – Students choose a subject, sketch thumbnail layouts exploring foreground/background and at least two balance types; record colour scheme.
  4. Demonstration (10’) – Teacher shows linear and atmospheric perspective techniques and colour‑mixing tips.
  5. Painting work time (30’) – Students begin their paintings, applying perspective, balance, and colour decisions; teacher circulates for feedback.
  6. Peer review (10’) – Pairs assess each other's work against the assessment criteria and suggest adjustments.
Conclusion:
Gather the class to recap how space, balance and colour were applied in their paintings, highlighting strong examples. Students complete an exit ticket by listing one change they would make after today’s lesson. For homework, they refine their artwork and write a brief reflective note on the design choices made.
