Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: select, review and refine work to produce a personal response
Learning Objective/s:
  • Analyse the brief and identify key visual requirements.
  • Select and evaluate photographs for relevance, quality and personal connection.
  • Apply editing techniques to refine both technical and conceptual aspects.
  • Construct a cohesive portfolio that communicates a personal narrative.
  • Self‑evaluate final work against a checklist and success criteria.
Materials Needed:
  • Digital cameras or smartphones
  • Computer with photo‑editing software (e.g., Photoshop, GIMP)
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed review sheets / portfolio checklist
  • Sample photographs for analysis
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:
Begin with a quick gallery walk of striking photographs to spark interest. Review the previous lesson on composition and discuss how briefs guide artistic decisions. Explain that today’s success criteria are selecting relevant images, critically reviewing them, and refining a personal visual response.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students view a set of images and note initial impressions relating to a given brief.
  2. Brief analysis (10’) – Whole‑class discussion on interpreting the brief’s theme, constraints and audience.
  3. Selecting work (15’) – Small groups choose five images from their own collections, justifying relevance and quality using the checklist.
  4. Critical review (15’) – Groups complete the review table, identifying strengths, weaknesses and improvement ideas.
  5. Refinement (20’) – Demonstration of editing techniques; students edit one image and plan a cohesive series, adding captions.
  6. Presentation planning (10’) – Students outline the sequence and layout of their portfolio.
  7. Self‑evaluation & exit ticket (5’) – Complete the self‑evaluation checklist and write one sentence summarising their personal response.
Conclusion:
Recap the cycle of selecting, reviewing, refining and presenting, highlighting how each stage builds a stronger personal voice. Students submit an exit ticket describing the next step they will take at home. For homework, finish editing the remaining images and draft captions for the portfolio.
