| Subject: Art and Design |
| Lesson Topic: develop knowledge and skills in a broad range of media, processes and techniques while demonstrating personal response |
Learning Objective/s:
- Identify key properties and handling techniques of five painting media (oil, acrylic, watercolour, tempera, gouache).
- Demonstrate preparation of supports and execution of fundamental processes such as underpainting, glazing, scumbling and impasto.
- Apply personal‑response strategies by creating a colour diary and integrating mixed‑media techniques into a final artwork.
- Evaluate work against the assessment checklist, reflecting on technical skill and conceptual development.
|
Materials Needed:
- Sample sets of oil, acrylic, watercolour, tempera, and gouache paints.
- Canvas panels, water‑colour paper, heavy illustration board, gesso, and sizing.
- Brushes (various sizes), palette knives, sponges, toothbrushes.
- Mixing trays, palettes, water containers, solvents, gloves, and fixative spray.
- Sketchbooks, colour‑diary sheets, printed handouts of the media comparison table.
- Projector or interactive whiteboard for displaying slides.
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual comparison of five painting media to spark curiosity. Ask students what they already know about the strengths and limitations of each medium. Explain that today they will explore how to choose and combine media to create a personal artistic response, and that success will be measured by a completed mixed‑media piece and a reflective checklist.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑Now (5'): Students list three characteristics of a chosen medium on sticky notes; share briefly.
- Mini‑lecture & demo (10'): Overview of media properties, support preparation, and safety; demonstrate gesso application and basic glazing.
- Guided practice (15'): Students create a monochrome underpainting on canvas (acrylic) then apply a thin oil glaze, while circulating for feedback.
- Exploration stations (10'): Rotate through watercolour, tempera, and gouache stations to experiment with wet‑on‑wet, scumbling, and impasto techniques.
- Personal response planning (5'): Quick mood‑board or sketch‑journal entry documenting concept, colour symbolism, and tool choices.
- Reflection & checklist (5'): Students complete the self‑assessment checklist and note next steps in their colour diary.
|
Conclusion:
Recap the key differences between the media and how they can be layered to enhance personal expression. Collect an exit ticket where each student writes one technique they will use in their final mixed‑media piece. Assign homework: finish the colour diary entry for ten pigments and sketch a plan for the final artwork.
