Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Art and Design
Lesson Topic: understand appropriate materials, processes, technologies and resources
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe key photographic materials and their properties.
  • Explain the sequential photographic process from planning to presentation.
  • Compare digital and analogue technologies and select appropriate tools for a concept.
  • Apply basic post‑processing techniques and evaluate the final output against assessment criteria.
Materials Needed:
  • Digital camera (DSLR/mirrorless) or film camera.
  • Lenses (wide‑angle, standard, macro).
  • Light‑blocking filters (ND, polariser).
  • Printing paper (glossy, matte) and compatible inks.
  • Darkroom kit or computer with Photoshop/Lightroom.
  • Projector or large screen for demonstration.
  • Handout/worksheet with process checklist.
Introduction:
Begin with a striking photograph that uses an unusual material or technique to spark curiosity. Ask students what choices of material and technology might have been made to achieve that effect, linking to prior knowledge of camera basics. State that by the end of the lesson they will be able to justify material and process decisions and articulate a clear workflow.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students list all photographic materials they have used and note one advantage and one limitation for each.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of key materials, processes, and contemporary technologies using projector slides.
  3. Group activity (15'): Teams create a quick visual brief for a photo concept, selecting appropriate camera, lens, filter, and output medium; record choices on worksheet.
  4. Demonstration (10'): Show a short workflow from RAW import to basic editing in Photoshop/Lightroom, highlighting metadata tagging and export settings.
  5. Hands‑on practice (15'): Students capture a test shot (digital or film) applying their selected settings, then begin basic post‑processing.
  6. Check for Understanding (5'): Quick quiz on material considerations and process steps using Kahoot or paper.
  7. Reflection (5'): Each student writes one sentence linking their material choice to the intended visual narrative.
Conclusion:
Recap the link between material selection, process planning, and the final presentation of photographic work. Students complete an exit ticket stating which material they would choose for a different concept and why. Assign homework: develop a one‑page photographic brief that outlines materials, process steps, and a brief artist’s statement for a self‑initiated project.
