Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: Safe working practices, including identifying hazards and making risk assessments.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and classify common hazards in a design and technology workshop.
  • Conduct a systematic risk assessment using the five‑stage process.
  • Apply the hierarchy of controls to select appropriate risk mitigation measures.
  • Record and communicate risk assessment findings using a standard form.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of control measures and revise assessments as needed.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for presentation
  • Printed risk assessment worksheets
  • Sample hazard identification cards or images
  • Personal protective equipment (goggles, gloves, ear defenders) for demonstration
  • Safety checklist handout
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip showing a workshop accident caused by an overlooked hazard to capture attention. Ask students to recall any safety rules they already follow in the classroom or home workshop. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify hazards, complete a risk assessment, and choose appropriate control measures.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list hazards they have seen in the workshop on sticky notes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present key concepts (hazard, risk, hierarchy of controls) using slides.
  3. Group activity (15’) – In small groups, use a provided task sheet (e.g., cutting timber) to identify hazards and fill a risk assessment form.
  4. Whole‑class debrief (10’) – Groups share findings; teacher highlights correct use of the risk matrix and control hierarchy.
  5. Practical demonstration (10’) – Show correct set‑up of a bandsaw with guard and PPE, reinforcing safe‑working procedures.
  6. Exit ticket (5’) – Students write one actionable safety step they will apply in their next project.
Conclusion:
Summarise how systematic risk assessment and the hierarchy of controls keep the workshop safe. Collect exit tickets to check understanding and remind students to complete the homework risk assessment for their upcoming project. Assign them to review the safety checklist and bring any questions to the next lesson.
