  • Plan and write a concise passage‑based response using a clear paragraph structure.
  • Construct a well‑structured essay that evaluates how the playwright develops a theme, supporting arguments with relevant quotations.

  • Proof‑read for accuracy in spelling, punctuation and textual references.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed copies of a selected drama (e.g., *Romeo and Juliet*)
  • Worksheet with a sample extract and planning template
  • Marking rubric handout
  • Timer/stopwatch
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Student notebooks or laptops
Introduction:
Begin with a quick discussion: which drama have you studied most and why might it be a good choice for the exam? Review the exam format – two questions on the same script, each worth 20 marks. Explain that today they will practise the step‑by‑step planning and writing techniques needed to achieve the criteria for content, analysis and structure.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list the dramas they know and note which themes they could discuss; share with a partner.
  2. Mini‑lecture (7’) – Overview of exam requirements and marking criteria; highlight what examiners look for in PBQ and essay.
  3. Passage‑based planning (10’) – Model a PBQ: read extract, identify speaker/situation, choose focus, outline paragraph. Students complete a planning worksheet for a new extract.
  4. PBQ writing (12’) – Students write their response using the paragraph structure.
  5. Essay planning (10’) – Brain‑storm theme ideas, select 2‑3 points, create paragraph plan with topic sentence, evidence, analysis, link.
  6. Essay writing (12’) – Students write the essay within the time limit.
  7. Peer review & proof‑read (5’) – Exchange scripts, check quotation accuracy, linking, spelling.
  8. Whole‑class debrief (5’) – Discuss common strengths and areas to improve; recap success criteria.
Conclusion:
Summarise how the planning templates helped them organise ideas and meet the marking criteria. For the exit ticket, each student writes one tip they will use in the next exam. Homework: complete a full practice set (one PBQ and one essay) on a drama of their choice, using the checklist.
