Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: The preparation of a design brief for a marketable product.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key components of a design brief for quantity production.
  • Analyse market research data to define target market and product requirements.
  • Apply cost‑estimation formulas to calculate unit cost for a given batch size.
  • Select appropriate manufacturing methods based on volume, cost and sustainability.
  • Evaluate sustainability and risk considerations within a design brief.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Design‑brief template worksheets
  • Cost‑estimation worksheets / calculators
  • Sample product images (e.g., Eco‑Smart Water Bottle)
  • Laptops with spreadsheet software
  • Printed case‑study handout
Introduction:

Begin with a quick video showing a popular product’s journey from concept to mass‑production to spark interest. Ask students what information a manufacturer would need before starting production, linking to prior lessons on market research. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to produce a concise, market‑ready design brief.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students list three pieces of information they think belong in a design brief.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Overview of the eight sections of a design brief and why each matters for quantity production.
  3. Guided activity (15'): In pairs, analyse a short market‑research excerpt and fill out the “Target Market” and “Functional Requirements” sections on the worksheet.
  4. Cost‑estimation demo (10'): Show the unit‑cost formula on the projector; students calculate cost per unit for a sample batch using provided data.
  5. Manufacturing method selection (10'): Quick poll of common methods, then groups choose the most suitable method for a given product scenario and justify their choice.
  6. Whole‑class synthesis (5'): Groups share their brief excerpts; teacher highlights good practice and common pitfalls.
  7. Exit ticket (5'): Students write one actionable improvement they would make to their brief.
Conclusion:

Recap the eight brief sections and how market data, cost estimates, and sustainability feed into each. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign homework: complete a full design brief for a product of their choice, using the template provided.
