Learning Objective/s:
  • Ask for directions using the polite phrase “请问…怎么走?” and specify a destination.
  • Give directions employing location‑verb patterns such as 在…左/右…, 经过, 到…后, and 在…附近.
  • Identify and correctly use key transport vocabulary (bus, subway, taxi, train station, airport) in speaking and writing.
  • Comprehend spoken directions and extract landmark information to answer detail questions.
  • Write an 80‑100 character paragraph describing a route, using at least five location verbs.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard for vocabulary table and map.
  • Printed handouts with vocabulary list, sample dialogue, and worksheets.
  • Audio recording of a native speaker giving directions.
  • Large campus/city map (poster or digital) for pair work.
  • Worksheets for reading comprehension and writing tasks.
  • Sticky notes or cards with destination prompts.
Introduction:
Begin with a quick picture of a busy street and ask students how they would ask for directions in Chinese.
Review previously learned location words and transport vocabulary, then explain that today they will practice asking and giving routes using authentic dialogues.
Success will be shown when each pair can correctly exchange directions and write a short route description.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Match transport vocabulary with pictures on the board.
  2. Vocabulary & Phrase Review (10'): Teacher models key phrases and location verbs; students repeat chorally.
  3. Listening & Speaking (15'): Play audio clip of directions; students note landmarks, then role‑play asking/giving directions using the map in pairs.
  4. Reading Comprehension (10'): Students read a short paragraph with missing words, fill in blanks, and answer comprehension questions.
  5. Grammar Focus Activity (10'): Construct sentences with the four patterns on mini‑whiteboards, peer‑check for accuracy.
  6. Writing Task (15'): Write an 80‑100 character paragraph describing how to get from home to the nearest subway station, using at least five location verbs.
  7. Wrap‑up & Assessment (5'): Quick oral exit ticket where each student states one direction phrase they used today.
Conclusion:
Recap the key phrases and location verbs, confirming understanding through a brief class poll.
Collect exit tickets where students write one direction they could give.
Assign homework: record a short video of themselves giving directions to a family member and submit the script.
Encourage learners to notice real‑world Chinese signage for practice outside the classroom.
