Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Drama
Lesson Topic: Positive and negative impacts: economic, environmental, socio-cultural
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and evaluate positive and negative economic, environmental, and socio‑cultural impacts of tourism.
  • Analyse how these impacts can be represented authentically in dramatic scenes.
  • Design a short performance concept that incorporates sustainable tourism principles.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint slides or printed impact tables
  • Handout with impact comparison chart
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Storyboard templates for scene planning
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip of a bustling tourist destination, then ask students to imagine the backstage realities behind the on‑screen glamour. Quickly recap previous lessons on character development and setting. Explain that today they will explore how tourism shapes economies, environments and cultures, and they will be judged on their ability to embed these insights into a believable drama piece.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5’) – Students list three tourism scenes they have seen and note any visible impacts.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Present the three impact categories using the projector, highlighting key positives and negatives.
  3. Guided analysis (10’) – In pairs, compare the impact chart to a short script excerpt, discussing how the setting could reflect each impact.
  4. Group brainstorming (10’) – Using sticky notes, generate ideas for a scene that shows both a positive and a negative impact in one setting.
  5. Scene planning (15’) – Teams fill a storyboard template, specifying character motivations, props, and sustainable tourism choices.
  6. Quick share (5’) – Each group presents their concept; peers give one constructive comment.
  7. Reflection & exit ticket (5’) – Students write one way they will ensure authenticity and sustainability in their final performance.
Conclusion:
Summarise how economic, environmental and socio‑cultural factors intertwine in tourism and why dramatists must portray them responsibly. For the exit ticket, students note the most surprising impact they discovered. Assign homework to draft a 2‑minute scene incorporating at least one sustainable tourism strategy.
