Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: English Language
Lesson Topic: Demonstrate understanding of how writers achieve effects.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify at least three writer’s techniques in a given passage.
  • Explain the specific effect each technique has on the reader.
  • Link each technique and its effect to the writer’s overall purpose.
  • Compose a concise analytical paragraph that includes a topic sentence, quoted evidence, analysis of effect, and a link.
  • Use a self‑assessment checklist to evaluate the completeness and accuracy of the analysis for the IGCSE exam.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed copies of a sample passage
  • Coloured highlighters
  • Worksheet with technique table and exam checklist
  • Student notebooks
  • Timer/stopwatch
Introduction:

Start with a quick think‑pair‑share: “What makes a piece of writing memorable?” Review students’ prior experience analysing texts for the IGCSE reading paper, then outline today’s success criteria – identify techniques, explain their effects, and connect them to purpose.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’): Students write a sentence describing a vivid image they recall and share briefly (hook).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’): Present a concise review of common techniques and typical effects using the projected table.
  3. Guided practice (15’): Read the travel excerpt together, highlight techniques, discuss their effects, and fill an analysis chart.
  4. Independent analysis (12’): Students work on a new short passage, underline techniques, and note the effects in bullet form.
  5. Peer review (8’): Exchange paragraphs, use the checklist to give feedback on technique identification and linking to purpose.
  6. Whole‑class debrief (5’): Summarise key points, answer questions, and reinforce the technique → effect → purpose link.
Conclusion:

Recap the essential link between technique, effect, and writer’s purpose, then ask each student to complete an exit ticket naming one new technique they will watch for. For homework, students will select a paragraph from a newspaper article and apply the same analysis steps.
