Subject: Design and Technology
Lesson Topic: The influence of the following design movements on the design of products: Art Deco, Arts and Crafts, Bauhaus, Scandinavian, Minimalism, Modernism, Postmodernism.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify key visual and material characteristics of each major design movement.
  • Explain how each movement influences product form, material selection and production methods.
  • Evaluate a contemporary product and justify which movement(s) most influence its design.
  • Compare and contrast two movements to propose hybrid design solutions.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • PowerPoint/Google Slides presentation with movement examples
  • Printed handout with comparative summary table
  • Sample product images (digital or printed)
  • Sticky notes and markers for group activity
  • Exit‑ticket slips
 Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual montage of iconic products from different eras to spark curiosity. Ask students what they notice about the shapes, materials and colours, linking to prior knowledge of product design basics. Outline today’s success criteria: students will be able to describe each movement’s hallmarks, analyse product influences, and articulate comparisons.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students match product images to design movements on a worksheet.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15'): Overview of the seven movements with slide examples.
  3. Guided analysis (20'): In pairs, groups examine a selected product, fill a template noting movement traits, material choices and user experience.
  4. Gallery walk (10'): Groups display their analyses; class discusses overlaps and contrasts.
  5. Whole‑class synthesis (10'): Teacher summarises key influences and records a comparative chart on board.
  6. Check for understanding (5'): Quick quiz via Kahoot or hand‑raise questions.
Conclusion:
Recap the main characteristics of each movement and how they shape product design. Students complete an exit ticket stating which movement they find most inspiring and why. Assign homework to research a modern product and write a brief paragraph linking it to one of the studied movements.
