Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: French
Lesson Topic: People and places (e.g. continents, countries and nationalities, compass points)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and pronounce the French names of the seven continents.
  • Match French country names with their capitals and nationalities.
  • Use French cardinal points to describe locations of countries.
  • Construct spoken and written sentences about origin, nationality, and location in French.
  • Demonstrate understanding through role‑play dialogue and a short descriptive paragraph.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed blank world‑map handouts
  • Vocabulary worksheets (continents, countries, capitals, nationalities)
  • Flashcards of countries and nationalities
  • Audio recordings for pronunciation (optional)
  • Markers and coloured pencils
Introduction:

Begin with a quick “Where in the world?” visual to spark curiosity about travel. Ask students to name any country they know in French, linking to prior lessons on basic greetings. Explain that today they will be able to talk about continents, countries, nationalities and directions, and that success will be measured by accurate map labelling and a short written paragraph.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students complete a short quiz on the French names of the seven continents displayed on the board.
  2. Vocabulary input (10'): Teacher projects the continent, country, capital and nationality tables; choral repetition and pronunciation drills.
  3. Matching exercise (12'): Learners work individually on a worksheet pairing French country names with their capitals and nationalities.
  4. Map labelling & compass activity (15'): Using the blank world map, students label continents, at least five countries, and write the French names; then answer direction prompts using cardinal points.
  5. Role‑play & writing task (13'): In pairs, students ask/answer origin and nationality questions; each student writes a 80‑100‑word paragraph describing a favourite country, incorporating continent, capital and at least three compass points.
  6. Formative check (5'): Teacher circulates, provides immediate feedback, and records observations on the assessment checklist.
Conclusion:

Review the key vocabulary by having a few volunteers share one sentence from their paragraphs. Students complete an exit ticket: write the French name of a continent and one cardinal direction for a given country. For homework, assign an additional worksheet that extends the map‑labelling activity with three new countries.
