Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Drama
Lesson Topic: Principles, aims and objectives of travel and tourism
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the core principles of the travel and tourism industry.
  • Explain how the industry’s aims are translated into specific objectives.
  • Analyse the role of key stakeholders in achieving sustainable tourism outcomes.
  • Evaluate challenges such as over‑tourism and propose mitigation strategies.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handouts summarising principles, aims and objectives
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Sticky notes for mind‑map activity
  • Laptop for student research
Introduction:
Begin with a short video clip showing a popular tourist destination and its impact on the local community. Ask students to share what they know about why people travel and how tourism can benefit or harm a place. Explain that today they will identify the industry’s guiding principles, aims and objectives and assess how these shape sustainable tourism. Success will be measured by their ability to link principles to real‑world examples in the activities.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students write three reasons they travel on sticky notes and post them on the board. (Engage prior knowledge)
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Present core principles and aims using slides, highlighting examples. (Direct instruction)
  3. Group analysis (15'): In small groups, students examine a case‑study worksheet and match objectives to corresponding aims. (Collaborative)
  4. Role‑play simulation (15'): Groups act out a tourism board meeting proposing a new sustainable product, using stakeholder roles. (Application)
  5. Mind‑map creation (10'): Whole class creates a mind‑map linking principles, aims, objectives and stakeholders. (Synthesis)
  6. Plenary & Check (5'): Quick quiz (exit ticket) where each student writes one principle and its related aim. (Assessment)
Conclusion:
Summarise how the principles guide the industry’s aims and the concrete objectives that stakeholders implement. Review the key points raised during the role‑play and mind‑map. Collect the exit‑ticket quiz to gauge understanding, and assign a brief homework to research a destination that has successfully applied sustainable tourism practices.
