Subject: English Language
Lesson Topic: Organise and structure ideas and opinions for deliberate effect.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify purpose, audience, and appropriate genre for a directed writing task.
  • Plan and organise ideas using logical structures and linking devices.
  • Write a coherent, well‑structured piece with effective paragraphing and appropriate register.
  • Evaluate writing against a checklist to ensure all criteria are met.
Materials Needed:
  • Printed stimulus article (e‑learning article)
  • Model answer handout
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Planning worksheet (brain‑storm, structure grid)
  • Highlighters
  • Examiner checklist
Introduction:
Begin with a quick discussion: “What makes a piece of writing persuasive and well‑structured?” Review prior knowledge of paragraph basics, then present today’s success criteria: students will plan, organise, and produce a formal letter that demonstrates purposeful structure and effective linking.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students read the e‑learning article stimulus and underline key points.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Explain directed writing requirements, genre conventions, and the importance of audience and purpose.
  3. Planning activity (15’) – In pairs, complete the planning worksheet: brainstorm ideas, choose a structure (problem‑solution / cause‑effect), and list linking devices.
  4. Writing task (20’) – Students draft a formal letter to the editor, applying the planned structure and paragraph model.
  5. Peer review & checklist (10’) – Exchange drafts, use the examiner checklist to give feedback, and revise accordingly.
Conclusion:
Summarise how the chosen structure and linking devices enhanced the argument. Students complete an exit ticket stating one technique they will use in future writing. Assign homework: write a second directed piece on a new stimulus, applying today’s planning steps.
