Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: French
Lesson Topic: Time expressions (e.g. telling the time, days, days of the week, months, seasons)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and use French time‑telling structures (heure, minutes, “et quart”, “moins…”) in oral and written form.
  • Name days of the week, months and seasons and incorporate them correctly in sentences.
  • Describe a daily routine using at least three time expressions and appropriate temporal adverbs.
  • Demonstrate understanding by completing translation and fill‑in‑the‑blank exercises with accurate French.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed worksheets (time‑telling, days/months/seasons, practice exercises)
  • Clock‑face poster with French labels
  • Flashcards for days, months and seasons
  • Audio recording of the sample dialogue
  • Student notebooks, pens and coloured markers
Introduction:

Begin by asking “Quelle heure est‑il?” and have a few students answer in French to activate prior knowledge of numbers. Remind learners that they already know basic verbs for daily routines. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to tell the time, name days, months and seasons, and use these expressions to describe a typical day.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write the current time in French on mini‑whiteboards; quick whole‑class check.
  2. Vocabulary review (10') – Flashcard matching game for days, months and seasons.
  3. Teaching time expressions (15') – Show the clock poster, model “Il est …”, practice with choral repetition and drilling.
  4. Sample dialogue & role‑play (10') – Play audio, read dialogue, then students practise in pairs.
  5. Guided worksheet practice (15') – Complete exercises 1‑3 (time, days, months) with teacher monitoring.
  6. Creative writing task (10') – Write a 5‑7 sentence paragraph describing a weekday using at least three time expressions, two activities and a day reference; peer feedback.
  7. Recap & exit ticket (5') – Students write one time expression they mastered and one lingering question on a sticky note.
Conclusion:

Summarise the key structures for telling time and the vocabulary for days, months and seasons. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign homework: finish the paragraph exercise (task 4) and review the quick reference sheet for revision.
