Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: how governments support business start-ups, e.g. grants, advice, low-cost loans, training schemes
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main types of government support available to start‑ups.
  • Explain how each support reduces barriers and adds value to a new business.
  • Analyse a case study to identify which supports were used and their impact on growth.
  • Apply knowledge by matching a hypothetical business idea to appropriate government schemes.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handout of government support types
  • Case‑study worksheet (XYZ Apps Ltd.)
  • Break‑even analysis worksheet
  • Laptops/tablets with internet access
Introduction:

Begin with a quick brainstorm: “What challenges do new businesses face when they start?” Capture ideas on the board, linking them to students’ prior knowledge of entrepreneurship. Explain that today they will discover how governments help overcome these challenges. Success criteria: students will be able to identify at least three forms of government support and explain their benefits.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students write three start‑up challenges on sticky notes; share and categorize.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Slide presentation outlining grants, advice, low‑cost loans, training schemes, tax incentives, incubators.
  3. Guided analysis (10’) – Examine the “Typical Government Schemes” table; discuss target audiences and main benefits.
  4. Case‑study activity (15’) – In groups, read the XYZ Apps example, complete a worksheet identifying the supports used and their outcomes.
  5. Whole‑class debrief (5’) – Groups present findings; teacher checks understanding against objectives.
Conclusion:

Summarise the key ways government support lowers barriers and encourages innovation. For the exit ticket, each student writes one government support they would seek for a personal business idea and why. Homework: research a local government scheme and prepare a brief summary to share in the next lesson.
